Letter from the President

Dear Needham Soccer Families,

The spring season is quickly approaching and there are a few Needham Soccer Club initiatives and updates to help improve your family’s experience.

The goals of the soccer club are simple, to provide a safe, fun environment for children in Needham to learn and enjoy the sport of soccer.

The club has grown substantially over the past year. The NSC Junior Academy (NSCJA) was launched last September for 1st and 2nd graders and is entering its second season. The organization quickly grew from about 1,100 players per season to more than 1,600 players for each of the fall and spring seasons. The number of volunteers has grown to greater than 250 people, the board of directors has been expanded to 13 people and the club continues to have two very dedicated full-time employees.

The NSC JA joins the NSC Champions League (NSCCL), an in-town soccer league for U9-U12 players, and the BAYS League, a travel program for players U9 – U18. Now children can play within the NSC from first grade through high school.

New Web Site

A new web site has been launched to provide clear and timely information. It is in the process of being fine-tuned and is located at www.needhamsoccer.com.

Player Development

The club has a renewed interest in player development with several new and continuing programs:

  • Player Development Officer - has been hired through Mass Premier Soccer to coordinate training programs for the teams. The PDO will also coordinate additional trainers for team practices, clinics and other training programs.
  • Junior Academy Clinic - is being run this spring for U7, U8 and U9 players. Professional trainers from Mass Premier Soccer will run the clinic to teach the skills of the game.
  • NSC Summer Clinic - will take place for players U7 through U18 between August 6th and August 16th. Professionals from Runners Soccer Academy will coordinate training the players.
  • Coach Development - the number of coach development seminars has increased and the club will be requiring all coaches to obtain coaching licenses and take a Positive Coaching Alliance course, with the registration costs to be reimbursed by the NSC.

Tournament Play

The Needham Memorial Tournament is run by the Needham Soccer Club and has grown to more than 800 teams and 14,000 players. It is one of the largest Memorial Day tournaments in the country.

Champions League teams had a Jamboree at the end of the fall season and are scheduled to have a post-season tournament at the end of the spring season. Other tournament options are available for teams and players as organized by the coaches.
